Plant, Promote, Protect Trees Greenville Greenville County, South Carolina

Welcome to Trees Greenville!

Greenville’s landscape has been constantly changing as the upstate grows. From farms and forests to homes and businesses, the upstate is different today than it was only a few years ago. Forty acres of land per day are being converted to other uses. Trees which were an integral part of this landscape are no longer standing as roads and subdivisions expand. The natural beauty which attracted this growth is being threatened.

TreesGreenville was formed in 2005 to help preserve the quality of life that has attracted many residents and businesses to the upstate.

Recognizing that Greenville’s future depends on maintaining the beauty of our land, TreesGreenville embraces its mission to plant, promote, and protect trees for all of us to enjoy where we work, live and play.

PLANTING LIST

TreesGreenville Projects

Our planting season is October-March.

This fall, we will continue to provide County Shade and kick-off two new programs:  the Legacy Trees Project and NeighborWoods.

TreesGreenville provides County Shade through planting projects in public parks and on public lands.  These projects give citizens the opportunity to participate in public tree plantings and improve their community.  County Shade projects are developed and completed in partnership with interested schools, governments, businesses and organizations.

The Upstate's Economic Development & Growth drives urban sprawl. TreesGreenville plants trees in response to those lost to sprawl.

What do we re-plant?  Quality trees!  Our native forest is an oak-hickory community.  That means that we should be planting oaks, hickories, elms, blackgum, maples, tulip poplar, magnolias, basswood, beech, ash, carolina silverbell, black gum (black tupelo), black cherry (NOT bradford pears), serviceberry, sourwood, and eastern redbud (this list is not inclusive of all native trees).

Legacy Trees

From the list above, we have identified Legacy Trees, trees that will live at least 100 years.  When planted in the right place, they will have the chance to do so.  This fall, the Legacy Tree Project will be kicked off in Greenville County.  Other organizations working on the Legacy Tree Project include:  the Carolina Foothills Garden Club, the Greenville Tree Foundation and the Green Umbrella.  We are working together to plant for our future.

What is TreesGreenville's role in the Legacy Tree Project?  Plant trees.  TreesGreenville has partnered with Carolina First to develop a GIS project to support our urban forestry initiatives.  TreesGreenville is using GIS to inventory past, present and future planting projects.  Beginning this fall, when appropriate based on the site, we will plant Legacy Trees (native species that can live at least 100 years and planted in a place they will be safe).

GIS- We are using GIS to identify and mark sites that meet the criteria for a Legacy Tree.  Future planting projects include Legacy Trees from the Bosque's at Carolina First Bank's Corporate Campus.

What is a bosque? A bosque is a tree nursery.  Carolina First developed a re-planting plan for the site of their new Corporate Campus.  This fall, 2008, Carolina First and the Furman Company will plant small legacy trees in bosque's in the areas that will not be developed immediatley.  These legacy trees, when larger, will be planted in Greenville County by TreesGreenville and Carolina First.   This fall, 2008, TreesGreenville and Carolina First will begin planting Legacy Trees throughout Greenville County.

NeighborWoods

Our CommuniTrees outreach program will begin this fall with our first NeighborWoods planting project.  The Brutontown Community has applied and been selected as our our first NeighborWood. TreesGreenville, partnered directly with the Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, will offer free planting, care & maintenance workshops at Greenville County Recreation District's Brutontown Community Center to community residents. TreesGreenville will provide planting supervisors, volunteers, trees, mulch, tools and refreshments.  TreesGreenville volunteers will plant public islands between the road and sidewalk on Old Paris Mountain Road.  Brutontown residents will be offered shade trees to plant on their private property if they agree to maintain them to the best of their ability.
